Walking Tours
Whether you’re a local resident, a weekend visitor, a traveller stopping in Canmore for a rest and a stretch, or a parent looking for something new to do with your kids, there are dozens of walking and hiking routes in and around Canmore that accommodate a vast range of abilities. Here are three:
Easy Policeman’s Creek
The trail along Policeman’s Creek is a great way to get to know Canmore on foot. A good place to start is at the NWMP barracks on 8 Street near the bridge. Across the bridge, follow the wooden boardwalk toward Spring Creek. You’re certain to see plenty of mallards.
Medium Goat Creek
Popular among hikers and mountain bikers, this 18-kilometre trail drops 291 metres from the summit of Whiteman Pass to the Banff Springs Hotel. Wide and generally smooth, much of the trail follows an old fireroad. As you traverse the entire length of Mount Rundle, you are treated to spectacular views of its steeply bedded slopes.
Hard Heart Mountain
Beginning at the Heart Creek Day Use area along the shores of Lac des Arcs, follow Heart Creek Trail for a short distance before assaulting the ridge. Once it begins, the climb continues mercilessly to the summit: no switchbacks – just straight climbing along a narrow, steep ridge. Be sure to look over your shoulder now and then: the entire Bow Valley sprawls beautifully below you.
